Clottey motivated by Pacquiao trainer's knockout forecast

When Joshua Clottey steps into the ring against WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao on March 13 the Ghanaian will imagine he is fighting someone else.

The 32-year-old said Thursday he had a world of respect for Filipino Pacquiao and liked him personally and so would be fixing his mind on another target as motivation.

"I'm going to fight because of somebody," Clottey told a small cluster of reporters as he ran on a treadmill at Kingsway Gym a few blocks south of the Empire State Building.

"I'm fighting Pacquiao, but I'm fighting somebody else outside the ring. Nobody knows. I'll let everybody know after the fight. It's my secret."

Clottey moved from the treadmill to the ring for some punching practice against a sparring partner.

Looking on from the side, his manager Vinnie Scolpino might have let the cat out of the bag.

"He wants to beat (Pacquiao's trainer) Freddie Roach. That's his motivation," Scolpino said. "He wants to put him in his place. He beats Pacquiao, he puts Freddie in his place, too. Roach says he (Pacquiao) is going to knock him out.

Scolpino said Clottey was offended by the prediction.

BEST SHAPE

The lean yet muscular Clottey worked up a healthy sweat as he moved from the ring to the heavy bag and speed bag before finishing with some calisthenics and stretching.

"I'm in the best shape of my life," said Clottey, a former IBF welterweight champion who will carry a 35-3 record into the bout, including a controversial split decision loss to Miguel Cotto in his last fight.

Pacquiao, named Fighter of the Year in the last two years and Fighter of the Decade by the Boxing Writers Association of America, stopped Cotto in the 12th round in his last fight.

Clottey's big payday clash with Pacquiao (50-3-2) came about when the Filipino's mega-fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr fell through over arguments about dope testing protocols.

The million-dollar-plus purse will be Clottey's biggest.

"This fight is like a miracle," said the Ghanaian, adding that his defensive skills would be a crucial factor in the bout.

"We all know Manny Pacquiao. When he comes, he starts throwing. I'm just ready. My body can take it.

"When he throws on me, I will block him and that will confuse him. He'll throw 30, and I'll throw four. The four will connect. The 30, I'll block most.

"I will wear him down. For sure."

"I have by no means gone the ring feeling like I defeated. I sense like I am undefeated. The Philippine boxer fighter sensation Nonito Donaire puts his cash on a late-rounds strike by Manny Pacquiao on March 13, 2010 at Cowboys Stadium, Dallas.

Nonito Donaire, regarded as the successor evident of Manny Pacquiao, told the daily PSA Forum last Tuesday that the Filipino’s velocity and power will be too much for Ghanaian Joshua Clottey to knob when the two clash at Cowboys Stadium in Dallas.

“Joshua Clottey is a dangerous boxer and has an extremely good cover,” Nonitor Donaire renowned.

Nonito Donaire, in the meantime, exposed that he will possible come back to the ring on May 8, 2010 in Mexico against an enemy which will be named soon and that he will force into training by the middle of March 2010 because he has to have “eight weeks of good quality training.”

On Nonito Donaire’s possible opponents are Fernando Montiel of Mexico and Hozumi Hasagewa of Japan.
“I want that clash (on May 8) to be a world title fight at 118 lbs,” said the 27-year-old Nonito Donaire of Philippines, who reigns as the World Boxing Association (WBA) interim super-fly titleholder when he fought Manuel Vargas.

While there is still abundance of free instance, Nonito Donaire is focusing on some showbiz commitment, including a shift in Manny Pacquiao’s comedy show "Show Me D Manny".
“I have to be in preparing soon,” answered Nonito Donaire when asked about his look on the show.

Jones lands Pacquiao vs Clottey bout

The owner of the Dallas Cowboys, who made a strong pitch to host the now-aborted Manny Pacquiao-Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight at Cowboys Stadium by offering a record $25 million site fee, landed the next best thing.

The new $1.2 billion state-of-the-art facility in Arlington, Texas, will host Pacquiao’s March 13 pay-per-view welterweight title defense against Joshua Clottey.

Jones and Top Rank’s Bob Arum and Todd duBoef, who toured the facility and were Jones’ guests at Saturday night’s Cowboys playoff victory against the Philadelphia Eagles, closed the deal for the bout on Sunday afternoon.

“Bob was persistent in keeping this alive as a place for Manny’s fight,” Jones told ESPN.com, while celebrating the deal with Arum and duBoef. “I’m so glad Bob came back to us. We are so excited about this event and that we will be able to bring a big fight here for the Hispanic boxing fans, and all boxing fans in this area, who are also Dallas Cowboys fans. It’s important for us. Manny is such an exemplary athlete.”

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, but Jones could not contain his excitement.

“I never got into the NFL or bought the Cowboys for the money. I was lucky enough to already have some,” he said. “This is about having a fighter like Manny and an event like this in our venue. When we finished the deal, I was shaking as much as I was when we beat the Eagles. I’m just as excited.”

The timing of the formal news conference has not been determined because Pacquiao still needs to come to the United States from the Philippines and Clottey is headed to the U.S. from Ghana.

DuBoef said it probably won’t be until after the Cowboys’ Jan. 17 game against the Minnesota Vikings.

Jones said the stadium won’t be set for the full 100,000 seating capacity as was planned for a Pacquiao-Mayweather bout. Instead, they’ll start in the 40,000-seat range.

“But that’s one of the great things about the stadium — we can expand the seating capacity as it warrants,” Jones said.

Arum (a huge New York Giants fan, not a Cowboys fan) was already in full promotional form after the deal was agreed to.

“This is going to be one of the biggest events in the history of boxing,” Arum said. “This is the most incredible stadium setting I have ever seen. It is absolutely unbelievable. This is going to be much, much more than just a boxing match. A lot of things that happen are ordained by God. We weren’t going to go here for Pacquiao-Mayweather fight because [Golden Boy CEO Richard] Schaefer wouldn’t get on a plane and come down here and see the place. So that didn’t happen. And now that fight isn’t happening. And now we are here with Manny for another fight. When people see this event and how it will be presented, nothing in the past will ever compare to it.”

Before the fight fell apart over a single issue — the protocol for drug testing — Arum was intrigued with the idea of bringing Pacquiao-Mayweather to Cowboys Stadium.

Arum, Schaefer and HBO Sports president Ross Greenburg were scheduled to be in Dallas on Dec. 9 to meet with Jones and tour the facility. But the night before, Schaefer called off the trip, a move that in retrospect was the beginning of the fight going downhill.

Besides being the home field for the Cowboys and now the host for Pacquiao-Clottey, Cowboys Stadium hosts the annual AT&T Cotton Bowl Classic and will host the NBA All-Star Game next month, the 2011 Super Bowl and the 2014 NCAA men’s basketball Final Four.

One of the stadium’s most significant fan-friendly elements is the world’s largest (and most expensive at $40 million) HD video board, which is 72 feet high and 160 feet wide. Jones said all fans, regardless of where they are seated, would have a good view of the action because of it.

Roach said: If Clottey lays on ropes, he's dead

Prized boxing trainer Freddie Roach has seen a loophole in Joshua Clottey’s defense that Manny Pacquiao could take advantage of when the two fighters slug it out on March 13.

“He's pretty strong and he has a good chin and he's a durable guy,” Roach said of the Ghanaian boxer in an interview with FightFan.com.

However, he described Clottey’s defense as very “passive”.

“Sometimes he goes to the ropes. I can't figure it out if he's being lazy and resting or he's trying to punch yourself out. But if he lays on the ropes and he has that passive defense on us, we're gonna kill him,” said Roach.

The trainer said that although Pacquiao did some “rope-a-dope” tactic during his fight with Miguel Cotto last November, he said the Filipino merely tested the Puerto Rican’s punching power.

“He was there for a reason. If he's just being lazy, then there's a problem with it but he has a reason, it's okay. I told him, 'I don't get the idea', but that's being Pacquiao,” said Roach.

The controversial trainer is currently overseeing Pacquiao’s training at the Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles, California.

He said he’s very impressed with the conditioning of the 7-time world champion, who is making his first title defense against Clottey.

“He looks pretty good... I was very happy with his performances,” said Roach.

Pacquiao will stake his World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight crown against the Ghanaian at the Cowboys Stadium in Dallas, Texas on March 13.

Roach attributed Pacquiao's superb conditioning partly to his brief down time after the Cotto fight. He said the "rest days" have worked wonders for the Filipino.

Pacquiao took a two-month vacation from boxing following his sensational 12th round technical knockout win over Cotto.

“He plays basketball everyday… it's like his favorite sport. He runs and runs the court and he came in to the New York press conference [for the Clottey fight] at 148 pounds,” said Roach.

Even in his adopted home of the Bronx in New York, nobody knows who Joshua Clottey is.

The Ghanaian slugger, however, gets the chance to make a name for himself on March 13 when he challenges World Boxing Organization welterweight king Manny Pacquiao at the Cowboys Stadium in Dallas.

“Near Yankee Stadium on Anderson Avenue, a muscle-bound man slams the door to his modest apartment,” writes Daniel Beekman of yournabe.com. “On the street, he starts to jog. No one points. No one stares.”

It’s a far cry from what Pacquiao experiences day in and day out over in Los Angeles, where, once, police had to be called in to ensure Pacquiao gets out of the Wild Card Boxing Club premises in one piece in time for a commitment.

“No one knows Joshua Clottey, a Bronx resident since 2003,” says Beekman.

But those who are close to the 32-year-old native of Accra believe Clottey has a puncher’s chance of scoring a huge upset.

“He works so hard,” John’s Gym owner and Clottey cornerman Gjin Gjini. “He doesn’t drink. He doesn’t party. He runs eight or nine miles a day, not on a treadmill, outside in the Bronx. On the street, in his building, no one knows who he is.”

Kwame Asante, who once worked Clottey’s corner, said Pacquiao can be beaten.

“He has a shot. He knows how to fight a southpaw. I know Joshua will win,” said Asante.

Meanwhile, former Hollywood star Jean Claude Van Damme dropped by the Wild Card on Wednesday to see Pacquiao work out, according to noted orthodontist Ed De La Vega, who customizes Pacquiao’s mouthguard.

De La Vega said Pacquiao extended his invitation to Van Damme, known for his kickboxing prowess, to watch his fight with Clottey.

Pacquiao will use strategy in Hoya fight to KO Clottey

In facing a guy like Joshua Clottey, 7-time world champ Manny Pacquiao would have to use the strategy he utilized in beating boxing great Oscar de la Hoya.

Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach said they would have to remove Clottey’s accurate punches by using almost the same lateral movements that confused De la Hoya.

"Clottey’s accurate if you stand in front of him, but the thing is, we’re going to be in and out and side to side and use our angles on him… It’s going to be very similar to the Oscar de la Hoya fight, I feel," Roach said in a report by FanHouse.com.

Pacquiao outpunched De la Hoya in 8 rounds during their Dream Match in December 2008. So outclassed was the boxing great in that match that his corner was forced to stop the fight.

Roach said for the "De la Hoya strategy" to be effective, Pacquiao would again rely on his superior speed.

"He’s not going to be able to catch us," said Roach.

Pacquiao is currently toiling at Roach’s Wild Card gym in Los Angeles, California in preparation for the March 13 fight.

He will be staking his World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight title, which he won from Miguel Cotto.

Roach said he has studied Clottey’s fights and saw some of his strengths and weaknesses.

"Well, he’s got a good chin, and he takes a good shot, and he can be a little heavy-handed. But he can be passive at times, and he lays on the ropes and kind of rests there a little bit. I’ve been studying him really well, and he makes too many mistakes," said the trainer.

Roach said these weaknesses, coupled with Pacquiao’s punching power and speed could mean Clottey’s first career loss by knockout.

"Pacquiao, I truly feel will be the first person to knock Clottey out," he said.

Pacquiao, meanwhile, had another good training day at the Wild Card Gym.

His conditioning expert Alex Ariza told PhilBoxing.com that the Filipino boxer is again in his usual unstoppable self, going 10 rounds on the mitts with hardly a break. This was aside on top of his regular training routine, including his exhausting conditioning exercises.

Despite the gruelling session, Pacquiao has found time to face the media to share his thoughts about Floyd Mayweather Jr.

The Filipino boxer said he understands why Mayweather came out with the drug testing demand, which led to the collapse of negotiations between their camps.

"I think I understand Floyd," Pacquiao told Robert Morales of BoxingScene.com. "He just can’t say, ‘Oh, I don’t want to fight. I’m not ready for the fight.’ He’s just making alibis to cancel the fight. He’s not ready."

He said such "excuse", which sparked allegations that he was on performance enhancing drugs, is unfair and damaging to him.

"I’m really disappointed because I sacrifice and train hard and focus for what I have achieved in boxing," said Pacquiao.

"If you are a true champion, no alibis, just fight."

He is a quick-fisted, accurate counterpuncher with an excellent left hook. And he has a good jab when he decides to use it.

His most recent fight was in June against Miguel Cotto. He lost a split-decision in a fight in which many thought he was punked by the judges.

He also lost by decision to Antonio Margarito in 2006. He had won the early rounds before breaking his hand in the fourth. Perhaps if that hand had been wrapped by the trainer of his opponent, the injury could have been avoided.

His only other loss was by 11th-round disqualification for repeated, intentional head-butts to Carlos Baldomir in a 1999 bout that Clottey was winning.

He’s managed to win a few fights, too. He beat Zab Judah via nine-round technical decision in 2008 and had a dominating win on points over a beefed-up version of the late Diego Corrales in 2007.

And for those who have just returned from a lengthy Antarctic expedition, a record-breaking stint on a Russian space station, or have recently awoken from a prolonged comatose state, there is a Filipino fighter named Manny Pacquiao who has been on a bit of a roll himself.

In a November fight with Miguel Cotto, after a competitive first five rounds during which Manny dropped Cotto twice, Pacquiao reached cruising speed and began to dominate, winning by 12th-round TKO.

This fight came, of course, after Pacquiao stuck Ricky Hatton like a Pamplona Bull putting its horn up the ass of a moron who had the bright idea of trying to run with it through the streets of Spain.

Pacquiao is a very fast-handed, hard-punching southpaw. He uses rapid in-and-out and side-to-side movement to set up stinging punches from angles that may have made Isaac Newton rethink his work.

The story of the Pacquiao vs. Clottey fight is going to be about whether Clottey’s pressure and counterpunching can overcome Pacquiao’s foot speed and quick-handed, sharp-punching attacks.

Clottey has been a difficult opponent for everyone he’s faced and Pacquiao probably won’t be the exception. Especially for the first eight rounds or so.

Trying to penetrate Clottey’s guard is like trying to get near one of Pacquiao’s veins with a needle—no easy task, even for someone with the speed and offensive capabilities of Pacquiao. At the same time, Pacquiao is not going to be there for Clottey to hit either.

Clottey is the type of fighter who needs to be set before he can throw. Pacquiao’s foot speed and movement are going to create all manner of vexation for Clottey, as he’ll have a hard time planting his feet to mount any type of sustained offense.

I see Pacquiao outworking Clottey and building a small lead early, although possibly without getting a whole lot of hard, clean punches through Clottey’s guard.

At some point, Clottey is going to have to open up a bit and try to slow Pacquiao down, probably by throwing his customary left hooks in the direction of Manny’s body. When he does, look for Manny’s right hook to counter effectively.

I think that by about the eighth round, Pacquiao will have assumed command and forced Clottey to either fight a losing battle of exchanges or spin himself into a defensive cocoon that he won’t be able to chew his way out of.

Clottey will have his moments along the way. But being light on power, he won’t be able to do enough damage or land a high enough volume of punches to slow Pacquiao to the point of submitting to his pressure game.

Clottey is more of a contender than a contestant playing the “Whose ass is Manny gonna kick next?” game, so I think he'll find a way to make it to the finish line. I’m going with Pacquiao by solid decision.

Pacquiao vs Clottey - Big Fight

When Manny Pacquiao looked down at the crowd from Jerry Jones’s personal suite at Cowboys Stadium, it looked strangely reminiscent of a Roman Emperor in the ancient Coliseum.

The comparisons to the Roman Coliseum continued throughout Tuesday’s news conference to formally announce Pacquiao’s March 13 welterweight title bout against Joshua Clottey.

“It was always in my mind that right here on the star we could put a ring,” Jones said. “And the best fighters in the world could come out and fight and their fans support them.”

Deep-voiced ring announcer Michael Buffer likened Cowboys Stadium to the Roman Coliseum and compared the fighters to gladiators of a different era.

During the news conference that resembled a football pregame show, Pacquiao’s promoter Bob Arum suggested Cowboys Stadium could replace Madison Square Garden or Caesar’s Palace as the “new mecca of boxing.”

Despite the magnitude of Cowboys Stadium and the sideshow filled with pyrotechnics and Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders, the proverbial elephant in the room still demanded attention.

This fight serves as a substitute only after the failure of promoters to agree on drug-testing stipulations between Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Jones pointed out the fact that had that fight taken place then, it would have happened in Las Vegas and not at Cowboys Stadium.

“I’m proud to have this fight,” Jones said. “Pacquiao is who I wanted. The different dynamics of the other fight played out best for us.”

Pacquiao spoke briefly about Mayweather and said the fight could still happen later this year.

“For me, I wanted to fight him, but he had a lot of reasons,” he said. “That’s why the fight was canceled.”

While boxing fans clamored for the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight, Pacquiao’s iconic trainer Freddy Roach said Clottey presents a better matchup.

“Action-wise, both guys will come to fight,” Roach said. “Mayweather’s a talented guy, but he puts people to sleep, and he runs and he runs and runs.”

Up-and-coming Dallas fighter Roberto Marroquin (11-0) has an undercard bout, but the rest of the card has not been determined. Arum introduced Marroquin as the official fighter of the Dallas Cowboys.

Boxing’s Super Bowl? Not really

“THIS is going to be the Super Bowl of boxing,” said Roach.

Not really. That would’ve been the hoped-for matchup between Pacquiao and Mayweather, which was scuttled after Mayweather outlined a drug-testing plan Pacquiao wouldn’t accept.

“This gave us an opening. We were very aggressive. We were pretty quick to make a deal,” Jones said.

Arum was smitten by the stadium during negotiations for a possible Pacquiao-Mayweather fight. Arum returned for a Cowboys playoff game, sitting near former President George W. Bush in Jones’s box.

Arum has promoted fights at the Astrodome and at Yankee Stadium. He predicts Cowboys Stadium “will have a big role in boxing for years to come.”

“I have never, ever seen anything like it,” Arum said. “There is nothing in the world like this place. It just blows you away.”

The stadium is hosting the National Basketball Association All-Star Game next month and will host the Super Bowl next year. It’s also in the running as a World Cup site, should football’s showcase come to the United States.

Money talks and Jones believes he can make it financially worthwhile for fighters. His goal is to host up to four or five fights a year, “once we establish that we are the place to fight and have the kind of stature that we want to have.”

For this fight, the Cowboys are planning to sell around 40,000 seats, offering tickets on all but the highest decks.

Jones vowed that fight night will be even splashier than the news conference, where sparklers fired from the tips of the flagpoles, and Michael Buffer gave his signature introduction.

“We’re going to make this one of the most interesting fights to view that there’s ever been,” he said. “It’ll have everything to do with the flexibility of this board right above the ring. We’re going to have some fun with it.”

The fight itself should be pretty good, too.

Pacquiao (50-3-2, 38 knockouts) is widely considered the best fighter, pound-for-pound, in the world. In November he beat Miguel Cotto, who beat Clottey (35-3, 20 KOs) last summer. However, that fight was a split decision that many felt should’ve gone to Clottey, a Ghanaian who lives in New York.

The boxers praised each other on Tuesday, and also were gushing over the facility and the glitzy news conference.

“I like the introduction,” Pacquiao said. “I’m surprised. I feel like I’m a...football player!”

Soon enough, he looked like one.

Jones presented Pacquiao with a No. 3 jersey featuring his name on the back. Clottey received a No. 13 jersey.
